The Historic Office was instituted in 1853 as Military Office of the General Staff Royal Corps; its aim was to collect, organize and store the military documents of the Sardinian Reign that had to be used for writing the history of the wars ​and the campaigns.

According to the Italian Law regulating the State Archives, all the books and documents, even those considered classified, produced over 50 years ago can be accessible for consultation. Documentation containing people’s sensitive personal data is publicly available if it was produced over 70 years ago (Legislative Decree 42/2004 article 122).
