Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár Országos Levéltára
The Hungarian National Archives were established in 1756 in the then capital of Hungary, Pozsony (Pressburg/Bratislava). The institute was moved to Buda in 1784 and located in its present main building in 1923. The building and the archival holdings were severely damaged during the 1944-45 and the 1956 sieges of the city. The largest public state archives in Hungary, the National Archives primarily holds the documents of the central state administration and various public, economic and financial organs as well as documents of families and individuals. In 2012, all the Hungarian municipal (county and city) archives were administratively incorporated into the central state archives, under the name National Archives of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár), making it the principal repository in Hungary holding collections pertaining to the Holocaust. Besides its archival and administrative functions, the institute also conducts various research projects, publishes extensively and organizes conferences, lectures and other academic and public events.
