The archival collections of the Military History Archives consist of some 7300 meters of paper records of 4004 institutes, organizations and individuals from the 18-20th centuries. The microfilm collection holds about 9 million frames including photocopies of foreign archival collections (e.g. the Kriegsarchiv in Vienna) pertaining to the military history of Hungary. The audiovisual collections include about 4000 archival films and documentaries, sound documents and interviews (testimonies) on audio and video tapes.

Established in 1918, the Military History Archives is a public state archives, which collects and preserves the documents of the Hungarian Ministry of Defence and the Chief of Staff and all the subordinate organizations and institutions as well as their predecessors since 1740. It holds significant private documentation concerning Hungarian War history as well. Besides its archival functions, the institute also conducts various research projects, publishes extensively and organizes conferences, lectures and other academic and public events.

Military History Archives is open to researchers on Tuesdays from 9am to 3pm and Wednesdays to Thursdays from 9am to 4pm.

It is strongly recommended to use public transport to visit the Military History Archives, as the access to the castle district with cars is limited. We suggest taking Bus no. 16. from Széll Kálmán tér (on Metro Line no.2.) and get off at Kapisztrán tér. From there, the institute is about 100 metre walk.
