Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen, Abteilung Westfalen

The Archives were originally founded in 1829 as"Königliches Provinzialarchiv" In 1947 the name"Nordrhein-Westfälisches Staatsarchi" was established. The State Archives today maintain the state authorities in the governmental districts of Arnsberg and Munster. The new Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen was founded in January 2004. As a section of the Staatsarchiv the Archives was then called"National Archives North Rhine-Westphalia State Archives Munster" In 2008 they were renamed"Landesarchiv Nordrhein-Westfalen Abteilung Westfalen" 

The State Archives hold many old documents from the Middles Ages and before. The majority of collections are records of public authorities and institutions after 1816, including internal administration records as well as financial, economic, transport, religious and justice administration records. Descriptions of the collections indicate that there are relevant NSDAP documents, records of organizations within the NSDAP, among others. The relocation of many of the archival materials prior to the bombings of World War II has allowed most of them to survive.
