The history of the Archives began in 1870 as"preußisches Staatsarchiv" later to become the existing Landesarchiv. The State Archives experienced damage from an air raid in April 1945, but records had been relocated to avoid destruction. The Archives relocated in 1979 to Prinzenpalais. In the summer of 1991 the new headquarters of the State Archives was officially inaugurated.
