The Archives were founded in 1832 as the Prussian State Archives. After the end of World War II in 1975 the renamed Landeshauptarchiv Koblenz was responsible also as a ministerial Archive of the upper authorities of the Rhineland-Palatinate in addition to the middle and lower authorities of the northern part of Rhineland-Palatinate.
Holdings of the Landeshauptarchiv Koblenz comprise of materials from the old Reich, the French reign on the Rhein, the Prussian time up until the end of World War II, the Nassau region, land registry, individual records as well as authorities of the Rheinland-Palatinate. Among others contains restitution- and/or compensation-related materials: Bezirksamt für Wiedergutmachung Koblenz und Trier; Amtsgericht Koblenz [incl. BEG appeals]; Landgericht Koblenz und Trier [appeals - Amt für Wiedergutmachung Saarburg]; Oberlandesgericht Koblenz; Bezirksamt für Wiedergutmachung Koblenz und Trier; Finanzämter der ehemaligen Regierungsbezirke Koblenz und Trier; Oberfinanzdirektion Koblenz; Landgericht Bad Kreuznach, Koblenz und Trier; Oberlandesgericht Koblenz; closed files
