Das 1464 zur Reichsgrafschaft erhobene Ostfriesland fiel nach dem Aussterben seines angestammten Regierungshauses 1744 an Preußen, wurde 1815 Teil des Königreichs Hannover und gelangte 1866 zusammen mit diesem erneut an Preußen.
