The State Archives of Appenzell Ausserrhoden hold the archival documents of the authorities, offices and courts of the Canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It takes over other documents of public institutions or private origin that are significant for Appenzell history. The holdings can be searched online in the [archive catalogue of the State Archives](https://query-staatsarchiv.ar.ch/). The history of Appenzell from its beginnings until the division of the land in 1597 is documented in the Joint Archives kept in the State Archives of Appenzell I.Rh..

Archival records that are not subject to protection interests are generally accessible within the framework of the regulations for use. Photographs of generally accessible archival materials for private use are permitted. Copies or scans of archive material should be ordered from the archive staff. Reproductions of archive material are released for private use only. Special contractual provisions are reserved. 
In 2012, the State Archives of Appenzell Ausserrhoden moved into the new premises in the annex of the armoury at Schützenstrasse 1a in Herisau. This provides users with a spacious reading room with direct access to the archive library.

Consultation of archive records is free of charge. Special services such as reproductions, transcriptions or research are subject to a fee.
