"The Archives was established in November 1922 as the Mogilev-Gomel Archival Bureau of the Gomel Province Executive Committee, which was reorganized as the Gomel Province Archival Repository at the Gomel Province Public Education Department in May 1923, and as the Gomel Province Archival Bureau in November 1923. \r\n\r\nIn January 1927, the archival bureau was reorganized as the Gomel Okrug Archives of the Central Archival Administration of the Belarusian Soviet Socialist Republic (BSSR); in July 1930, as the Gomel Division of the Central Archival Administration of the BSSR. In February 1933, this was made the South-Belarusian Division of the Central Archival Administration of the BSSR; in March 1936, the Gomel Division of the Central Archives of the BSSR; in April 1936, the Gomel Division of the Central State Archives of the BSSR.\r\n\r\nIn July 1938, the archival division was reorganized as the Gomel Regional Archives; in March 1941, as the State Archives of Gomel Region.\r\n\r\nIn World War Two, during the German occupation from the mid-1941 to late 1943 the Archives did not function.\r\n\r\nOn October 15, 2001 the Archives received its present name of the State Archives of Gomel Region. There are records concerning the suppression of Strekopytov's rebellion against communists in 1919. \r\n\r\nThe data on the development of economics in the Gomel region are provided in the fonds of statistical bureaus, planning commissions, the provincial division of the People's Commissariat of the Workers and Peasants Inspection of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic (RSFSR), land departments, collective and state farms.\r\n\r\nRecords of the Western Railroad Administration, the Gomel Division of the Belarusian Railroad, the Dnepr-Dvina and Upper-Dnepr River Steamship companies, local post stations, postal telegraph offices, and the Gomel Region Broadcasting Directorate illustrate the formation and development of various transportation and communication agencies.\r\n\r\nThe fonds of labour and welfare organizations contain data on the local commissions for the assistance to Red Army soldiers who were wounded or ill and the committees for peasants mutual aid; data on the registration and allocation of labour, and the universal labour service. \r\n\r\nThe activity of trade union organizations is reflected in the fonds of the provincial, regional and district trade union committees.\r\n\r\nInformation on the state of natural resources and ecology, market economy and pricing, the establishment and development of various private organizations and the Free Economic Zone in the Gomel region, the construction of gas networks and equipment, the state of criminality and the conduct of the law-enforcement agencies are held in the fonds of the regional executive committee and its boards.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the Archives holds a collection of personal papers related to the participants of the October Revolution of 1917, the Russian Civil War (1918-1921) and World War Two, politicians and public figures.
