Ellen Fletcher (née Amster) was born on Dec. 3, 1928, in Berlin, Germany. Her father, Leo Leib Auster, was an auditor. Her mother, Ilse Tebrich Auster, worked as a secretary. Ellen's parents divorced when she was a small girl, and her father returned to his native Poland before World War II. Ellen, as the daughter of a Polish citizen living in Germany, was considered a Polish citizen. She attended the Jewish School for Girls in Berlin. In December 1938 she left Berlin on a Kindertransport to England. She stayed in Harrowgate, a hostel for refugees in York and Leeds. Ellen's mother and stepfather succeeded in immigrating to the United States in June 1941. Ellen joined them in N.Y. in May 1946. She married Martin W. Fletcher in 1955.
