Greta Meier papers
Grete Löwenstein Meier was born on November 4, 1924 in Bocholt, Germany. Her father, Berthold Löwenstein, owned a small department store and her mother, Martha Löwenstein, took care of the children. Greta had an older brother, Hans (now Jack Lowson, b. 1921) and a younger sister, Ilsa (now Ilsa Lebach, b. 1927). In May 1939 Greta’s brother immigrated to England where he worked as an engineering apprentice. In July 1939 Greta and her sister, Ilsa, left Germany on a Kindertransport and both spent the war years in Cambridge, England, living with English families. In December 1941, Berthold and Martha Löwenstein were deported from Bocholt to Riga, Latvia, where they both perished. In January 1946 Greta married Hans Harry Meier, who came from her hometown, Bocholt. The same year they immigrated to the United States. Jack and Ilsa followed her and settled in the United States. Greta and Harry Meier have four children.
