Maurice Saltiel was born in Thessaloniki in 1922. His father, Isaac Saltiel, was a cloth merchant, and his mother was Sara Saltiel, (née Serrero). He graduated from the Second High School of Thessaloniki and continued his studies at the School of Economics and Commerce in Athens. In 1942, he had returned for a holiday in Thessaloniki, but he fled to Athens, due to the anti-jewish measures. In Athens, he lived in hiding with the help of his friends, until the end of the Axis Occupation. In the spring of 1943, his parents were transferred to Auschwitz-Birkenau where they were exterminated. Upon his return to Thessaloniki in 1946, Saltiel reopened his father's commercial store at 3 Vilaras Street. In 1970, he closed the store and worked for three years as a sales representative for the David Karasso company. Alongside his circular studies, Saltiel studied music (violin) while at an older age he took theoretical music lessons with Solon Michaelidis. Anxious and sensitive, he was active for many years in the cultural events of Thessaloniki. On his own initiative, and that of his friends Yiannis Triantafyllidis and Michalis Tsitsiklis, the"Macedonian Artistic Society"Techn" (Art) was founded in 1951, an association that pioneered the post-war cultural life of Thessaloniki. Saltiel served"Ar" for more than 30 years from the positions of board member, general secretary and vice president. According to the testimonies of his partners, he was the main driving force behind the successful course of this union. He was a member of the board of directors of the State Theater of Northern Greece (Kratiko Theatro Voreiou Ellados), for a short time in 1974. He was re-appointed to the board of directors of the KTHBE in 1981. He was also a member of the board of directors of the State Conservatory of Thessaloniki (Kratiko Odeio Thessalonikis) in the period 1986-1987. Maurice Saltiel often wrote articles about the cultural issues of Thessaloniki. In 1975 he pioneered in the establishment of the Coordinating Committee of Cultural Associations of Northern Greece as well as the establishment of the School of Fine Arts in Thessaloniki. He died after a long illness in 1998 in Thessaloniki.
