Papers of Chief Rabbi Sir Israel Brodie 
Sir Israel Brodie (1895-1975), the son of Aaron Brodie of Newcastle upon Tyne, was educated at Rutherford College, Newcastle upon Tyne; Jews' College, London; University College, London; and Balliol College, Oxford. Between 1917 and 1919 Brodie served as a Jewish Chaplain to the Forces. He worked for social services in the East End, London, 1921-3; as a rabbi in Melbourne, Australia, 1923-37; and as Lecturer and Tutor at Jews' College, London, 1939-48. Brodie was Jewish Chaplain to the Army and RAF, 1940-4, and Senior Jewish Chaplain, 1944-8. From 1948 until his retirement in 1965, Brodie was Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the British Commonwealth of Nations. In 1969, he was created a KBE. He married Fanny Levine, a native of Warsaw.
