William Guttmann (1904-1986) was born in Gliwice, Poland (Gleiwitz, Upper Silesia), the son of a Jewish publican and distiller. He studied law in Munich then emigrated to Italy after the Nazi seizure of power. He arrived in England shortly before the outbreak of war. Through his brother, the eminent psychiatrist, Eric Guttmann, he was introduced to David Astor, the proprietor of The Observer newspaper. William wrote for The Observer for many years even after he retired in 1969.
