Lily Freeman (formerly Friedmann) née Fischer (b.1920) was born in Vienna into a Jewish family. She fled to Great Britain in 1938 aged 18, and was interned as an enemy alien soon thereafter, spending a month in Holloway prison and a year on the Isle of Man. She moved to Hampstead and married Frederick Freeman (formerly Karl Fritz Friedmann). Later she enrolled at the Arthur Segal School to so study art and became a successful artist and lecturer in the history of art at the University of the Third Age.
