Leonard Montefiore collection
Leonard Nathaniel Goldsmid Montefiore (1889-1961) was the only son of Claude Montefiore by his first wife, Therese Schorstein, who died in child birth. After graduating from Balliol College, Oxford, he worked at Toynbee Hall where he came in to contact with poor immigrants. After military service during World War One, in which he served in India and Russia, he devoted his life to public service. He was one of the leaders of the West London Synagogue for 30 years. He occupied senior positions within the Anglo-Jewish Association since 1926. He was joint chairman of the Joint Foreign Committee. He spent 20 years at the Jewish Colonisation Association. He worked at Bloomsbury House for the Central British Fund and became the president of the Wiener Library in the aftermath of World War Two.
