Laura Selo was the oldest of three sisters who were brought up in a middle class assimilated Jewish family in Berlin. The family later moved to Prague and the girls came to Great Britain on one of the 'Nicholas Winton' trains. Grete Gumpel, Laura's mother perished in a mass grave in Chelmno on 15 May 1942. Laura's father managed to escape to Great Britain and was intened during the war.
