His father owned a large timber yard which he inherited from his father. He also owned a haulage company. His parents were born on Russian territory which later became Polish. Both Russian and Polish were spoken at home.

Israel studied at the state Gymnasium, where he was one of only four Jewish children. He experienced anti-semitism even from the teachers. He led a secular life at home, where few Jewish holidays were celebrated although he did have a Bar Mitzvah.

After war broke out he made a long tortuous journey which finally ended in Palestine which became his home. His brother made his home in the UK. The parents are thought to have perished in the Warsaw Ghetto.
