Wilfrid Israel: copy correspondence
Wilfrid Israel was the heir to a Berlin business dynasty and an important figure in the rescue of Jews in Europe during the Nazi period. Born in London in 1899, educated at the Französische Gymnasium in Berlin, he was fluent in both German and English, so his letters are written in both languages. As a result of the secrecy in which he operated, all his personal documents were destroyed before he left Berlin in 1939; but evidence of his work remains in archives, official and personal, in several countries, including the UK, USA and Israel.

Wilfrid Israel was killed on 1 June 1943 when a Luftwaffe fighter patrol shot down the unarmed passenger jet in which he was flying to Bristol from Lisbon.
