Tábor was founded in 1420 by the Hussites. The town was headed by four elected governors. Tábor became a royal town in 1750 and Maria Theresa promoted Tábor to regional town (remaining so until 1848). In 1960, Tábor became the center of a large district, which also included the existing Soběslav district, and parts of the Milevsko, Votice, Pacov and Týn nad Vltavou districts.
