Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans fonds
The Jewish War Veterans of Canada is an organization established to bring together Jewish war veterans from all past wars. The organization was founded in 1969 and at its peak included nine branches, Posts, including the Jewish War Veterans of Canada - Ottawa Post. The book"THERE I WAS.." was an initiative of the Ottawa Post of the Jewish War Veterans in the late 1990's. Spearheaded by Freda Lithwick (first lieutenant nursing sister), the book is a collection of the reminiscences of Ottawa’s Jewish servicemen who fought in World War II. (49% of the population of Jewish men in Ottawa enlisted in military service.) The book was published with the assistance of Cy Torontow, (RCAF wing commander), Elliott Gluck (Lieutenant in the Royal Canadian Army Service Corps), Morrie Konick (RCAF squadron leader), and Morton Baslaw (RCAF leading aircraftsman). Morton Baslaw, retired from the graphic art business, looked after design and layout. More than 50 veterans responded to an appeal for first person stories. Jack Granatstein, director and chief executive officer of the Canadian War Museum, wrote the foreword to the book.
